Apparently according to Word of God, Nai'ka on the whole are gullible as all get out. So just because Rei is smart doesn't mean that he realized that the 'free candy' van might not be legit. So to speak.
I know that, but counterpoint: Rei is unusual for a Nai'ka on account of living on the surface for awhile and actually understanding human behavior. I don't know if this applies to SP, seeing as it's five years in the past.
But who knows how long he's been stuck there? A large portion of his time on the surface could have been at the not!brothel.
